Neck Pain

Neck pain can be localised, refer pain between the shoulder blades or can even cause headaches and dizziness all of which can be debilitating but most of all worrying. Our Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists are all qualified to assess and diagnose many types of neck pain. We can create management plans to treat and prevent your symptoms and put your mind at ease.

Here are a few common causes of neck pain that we manage regularly at Summit Wellbeing East Sheen and East Grinstead.

Discogenic Pain, Herniated Discs Or Annular Tears

As in the lumbar spine and thoracic spine the bones in the neck are supported above and below by a disc. These discs can be subject to injury and trauma and can herniate, prolapse or tear. When this happens disc material can bulge out, this and the subsequent inflammation can easily irritate the sensitive nerves leaving the neck travelling down into the shoulder blade, arms and head. (The term slipped disc is not accurate, as the majority of the disc material is held in place and cannot actually ‘slip’). You often get a sharp aching pain at the site of injury then referred pain or symptoms such as pins & needles or numbness travelling along the path of the nerve. This could be down the shoulder, arm and into the fingers. If you notice significant weakness in the arm seek medical assistance quickly.

Facet Joint Pain & Myofascial Pain

Each bone in the neck articulates with the one below and above via two joints known as facet joints. These are small joints that can easily be over stretched or compressed with sudden or sharp movements of the head or prolonged positions of stress. The pain can present as an immediate pain, a deep dull ache or a sudden locking/inability to move the neck. Pain can radiate around the site of injury down into the shoulders or up into the head.

The spine is surrounded by lots of muscle, ligament and tendons that can also become overloaded or injured causing pain. Symptoms are similar and can refer away from the site of tightness or injury. All of the above respond well to manual therapy, acupuncture and exercise.

Whiplash Associated Pain

This pain often can take hours or days to develop which can be a strange thing to experience, walking away from an accident with no pain, then waking up the following morning in agony. Symptoms of whiplash often include neck pain and Stiffness, headaches, dizziness and pain in and around the shoulders or further down the back. This responds well to gentle treatments like massage and acupuncture plus exercise.

Osteoarthritis/ DDD/DJD

As you age it is perfectly normal for your neck to show signs of wear and tear and age related changes. Discs lose water and bones get closer together as a result. This can cause the nerves to get easily irritated as they leave the spinal cord, causing local neck pain and radiation of pain/pins and needles down the arm. Facet joints can also be negatively affected with bone spurs and sclerosis which limit movement and cause pain. All of the above respond well to exercises and gentle manual treatments.
