Andrew is a lifelong sports enthusiast, both throughout his professional career and personal life. He has worked within the sports development field for over 10 years for third sector charitable organisations and governing bodies, in program design, management and impact assessment. Outside of paid work Andrew has been a qualified endurance athletics coach since 2007, coaching athletes of all ages and abilities. Nutrition, out of all the component parts that combine to determine sporting performance was always one of the most interesting and compelling aspects to Andrew and in 2016 he ‘re-trained’ and was awarded an MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition from St. Mary’s University.
Andrew formed “Fuelling Your Adventures”; a partnership of MSc qualified Sports Nutritionists as a vehicle to provide evidence-based, personalised nutritional support and education to endurance athletes. Fuelling Your Adventures specialises in supporting runners, cyclists, duathletes, triathletes, rowers, adventure racers and explorers of all abilities to PARTICIPATE in events, COMPLETE personal adventures and IMPROVE racing performance.
Effective, personalised nutrition is the decisive ingredient in sports performance. After all how can you perform optimally and maximise your ability, without the correct type and volume of fuel, relevant to your activity? Carefully crafted training schedules can result in unfulfilled goals without appropriate nutrition to match their content; maximising adaptations and supporting in illness prevention are key factors in elevating performance. Andrew is a strong advocate of applying scientific evidence, which is RELEVANT to what YOU are doing in a PRACTICAL way. Sports nutrition can be a confusing topic for participants of endurance sports. Delving into sports media can compound confusion with contradictory messages often within the same front and back cover. In a world of twitter, the view that holds current sway is often the one that shouts the loudest as opposed to the one based on the most robust evidence. Fuelling Your Adventures exists as your guide and mentor through the conflicting messaging, following a sensible evidenced path centred on your needs, as opposed to sensationalised ‘theory’.
Andrew is currently working with WorldTour professional cyclist Alice Cobb (Lares-Waowdeals), 9 x British, 2 x European Champion and World Championship Bronze Medalist Cyclocross rider Helen Wyman (Kona Factory Racing) as well as supporting the NEXT Wyman Cyclocross Development Project. Additionally, Andrew is currently advising the Lake Baikal 2018 expedition to Siberia, a Commonwealth Games Heptathlete as well several recreational multi-sport and ultra-endurance athletes with many varied and interesting goals.
Andrew regularly participates in cyclocross, cross-country, trail, road running and duathlon races. In 2012, he cycled from London to Paris in less than 24 hours. He holds a particular love for the autumn, forests, mountains, bikes (specifically hubs) and Scottish Rugby Union (not to mention the Manic Street Preachers and other great music).
